To kick off the second edition of #somethingiswrong, artists, curators and participating organisations met in Innsbruck for an exchange on the topic of violence against women in general and specifically. The artists presented their working methods, the organisations presented their focal points and together they discussed how art in public space can find answers and ask questions about this topic.

Was denkt der Fotograph? Was denkt der Graphiker? Was denkt der Autohändler? Was sehen wir überhaupt? Was wird gesehen?

A joint discussion framed by input talks with the experts Monika Hauser and Armin Bernhard. Monika Hauser, founder and chairperson of the women’s rights organisation medica mondiale, draws a comprehensive picture of the causes, forms and consequences of gender-based violence and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the female population. She particularly emphasises the influence of patriarchal structures in shaping stereotypical images and myths, which often make women* themselves the originators.

In addition to his sociological expertise, Armin Bernhard also brings in a male perspective by focusing on the socialisation process of boys and men and its effects.

Lecturers:

Fouzia Wamaitha Kinyanjui (activist and feminist)

31.03.2021 ::: 4pm – 7pm
In Italian and English

An input discussion with experts and activists Barbara Bachmann & Franziska Gilli, Fouzia Wamaitha Kinyanjui and Christine Clignon, who look at the issue of violence against women* from different perspectives.

The reporter Barbara Bachmann and the photographer Franziska Gilli show the contradictions of the Italian image of women and tell of a conservative understanding of roles and a newly emerging feminism. Fouzia Wamaitha Kinyanjui reports on violence against women* in South Tyrol from the perspective of a Black feminist activist. She questions racist power structures, white power and points out the need for an intersectional perspective. Who speaks and about whom? Who is allowed to ask questions? And who answers? Whose experience counts? And who defines knowledge in the first place?

Finally, the chairperson of the Contact Point against Violence (GEA), Christine Clignon, brings in another point of view by reporting on the importance, function and mode of operation of women’s shelters and by including data and facts about violence against women* in South Tyrol. The individual inputs will be accompanied by a joint discussion among the participants.
